General Abdominal Exam
Please assess the student performing a general abdominal exam. (Do NOT perform special maneuvers for the liver/spleen/ascites/peritonitis)

GENERAL - Observe the student doing the following:

Washes hands
       
Introduces self and exam to patient
           
Appropriate draping of patient

Expose from the nipple line to the ASIS with the arms by the side

               

INSPECTION - The student should comment on the following:

Patient's general appearance

Ex: writhing, still, cachectic, generally well/unwell etc.

               
Thorough abdominal inspection

Comments on shape, scars, herniae, skin changes, prominent vasculature

               

AUSCULTATION- Observe the student performing the following manoeuvers:

Auscultates in all 4 quadrants

Comments on quality of bowel sounds

               

PERCUSSION- Observe the student performing the following manoeuvers:

Percusses in all 4 quadrants

Comments on quality of percussion (tympanic, dull)

               

PALPATION - Observe the student performing the following manoeuvers:

Light palpation in all 4 quadrants

Comments on tenderness, peritoneal signs

               
Deep palpation in all 4 quadrants

Comments on presence of masses, or tenderness
